Plain cement concrete due to its low tensile strength and impact resistance is considered to be a brittle material, however marked improvement in these properties can be bought about by the addition of small diameter, short length, randomly distributed fibres.
The fibres can be emarginated as an extreme deviation in shape from the rounded smooth aggregate. The fibres unlock and entangle around aggregate particles and considerably reduce the workability, while the mix becomes more cohesive and less prone to segregation.
The fibres suitable for reinforcing the concrete have been produced from steel, glass and organic polymers.
The major factors affecting the characteristics of fibre reinforced concrete are:
* Water Cement ratio.
* Percentage of fibres.
* Diameter and length of fibres.
